Samsung Electronics plans to put an end to using plastic for packaging its products. In a statement released on Sunday, January 27, the Korean tech giant announced this decision.

“From the first half of 2019, the packaging used currently for Samsung’s products and accessories – ranging from mobile phones and tablets to home appliances – will be substituted with environmentally sustainable materials like recycled/bio-based plastics and paper,” the statement read.

With this move, the company will join a host of other such companies that are working to reduce their plastic usage. The decision to swap plastic packaging with something more sustainable and eco-friendly is the need of the hour. In today’s times when there is so much damage being caused by plastic to both environment and ecology, this is a welcome move.

Samsung plans to replace the plastic used for holder trays in mobile phone, tablets and wearable products’ packaging. The company also plans to swap glossy exterior with a matte finish in its phone chargers and eliminate plastic protection films.

“We are committed to recycling resources and minimizing pollution coming from our products. We will adopt more environmentally sustainable materials even if it means an increase in cost,” said Gyeong-bin Jeon, head of Samsung’s Global Customer Satisfaction Center.

The company aims to use 500 thousand tons of recycled plastic by 2030.

What do you think of this initiative? Will it inspire others to follow suit?
