A painting by British painter David Hockney sold for a record $90.3 million, shattering the auction record for a work by a living artist. The 1972 painting, ‘Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)’ was sold at Christie’s. However, the name of the successful bidder was not disclosed. It depicts two men, one swimming and the other standing outside a blue pool. It surpassed, by a huge margin, the previous record held by U.S artist Jeff Koons, whose work was sold for $58 million in 2013.
David Hockney, 81, is considered one of the most popular and influential artists of all time. The sale of this painting has only consolidated this position.
