2nd April is observed as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations “to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.”
The day also seeks to support and show solidarity with persons with autism.
What is Autism?
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurological condition that impairs the ability to communicate effectively and hampers social interactions. It is also characterized by profound interest in certain topics or subjects, non-standard ways of learning and development, and specific ways of processing sensory information.
Autism can impact a person irrespective of the race, ethnicity, and social background. While autism is very prevalent across the word, there is a distinct lack of awareness and understanding about this condition.
Theme for Autism Awareness Day 2020
The theme for Autism Awareness Day 2020 is ‘The Transition to Adulthood.’ This theme seeks to encourage a smooth facilitation of people with autism into their adulthood by giving them the appropriate resources and means in the society.
Background of World Autism Awareness Day
By the resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 18th December 2007, 2nd April was designated as World Autism Awareness Day.
The first World Autism Awareness Day was observed in 2008.
